A laboratory method to introduce foreign DNA or RNA into a bacterial (prokaryotic) or human (eurkaryotic) cell. The DNA, called plasmid DNA, is typically produced in specialized bacteria. DNA and RNA for transfection can also be manufactured synthetically using specialized machines. This is the method used in gene therapy for carrying corrected genes into the body by way of a vector.
