A laboratory method that uses genetically engineered viruses to introduce corrected copies of defective genes into affected cells. These engineered viruses are unable to replicate and cannot cause an infection. However, large-scale delivery of these viruses to a patient can in some instances lead to an overly exuberant inflammatory response.
