A group of diseases of the nervous system characterized by the dysfunction and premature death of neurons. These diseases may impact the peripheral nervous system and/or central nervous system. Neurodegeneration is not apparent until a significant amount of damage to the nervous system over time has occurred, resulting in symptoms and diagnosis.
